In a newly published book 'The Happiness Project,' Gretchen Rubin says, "Looking for happiness? Try singing!" The Happiness Project book became an instant best seller.
Rubin says, "You know, I'm a terrible singer. Everybody laughs at my singing, but one of my main focuses of my happiness project was to create a more lighthearted calm atmosphere in my household."
"The singing makes you feel ridiculous," he says. "And it is hard to remain stressed when you are doing something foolish."
In a 2004 study with members of a professional choir in Frankfurt, Germany, published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, scientists found that singing strengthens the immune system.
And it is not just professional singers who benefit, according to a member of an amateur singing group on Vancouver Island, Canada. Shirley Whitelaw is the founder of of 'More singing please.' "We are not a choir," she stresses.
"We don't have another word for it yet, but we are not a choir,"
The group gets together three times a week to sing for fun. "There are no rules here. The only rule we have is to keep your clothes on. Beginners float along learning the songs. We sing the songs over and over again, because the joy is in singing and feeling the song."
